12. The Bento Box

After the dust had settled, they were ordered back to HQ. Jack was instructed to park his Samson, get into his Sentinels uniform, and report to Captain Peppers.

Once his Samson was parked he looked it over. It was in rough shape. Far rougher than it should have been. A shotgun blast shouldn't have been able to do that to his Goliath. He was going to get to the bottom of it, but right now he had to check in with the Captain. He opened his cell door to leave and found a waiting Technician Ratledge.

"FF! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine Ratledge. How can I help?"

"I got a call your Samson needed to be evaluated for damage. Are you sure you're okay?"

"I'm sure." he said smiling, "By the way, I've been meaning to talk to you. You did a great job on my Samson when I first got my Sentinel's Star. Thank you."

"Thanks, FF! That means a lot!" Ratledge puffed his chest in pride. Jack walked past him, resisting the urge to shake his head at the new nickname.

He knocked on Captain Peppers door and was invited inside. The Captain was on a call and motioned for Jack to take a seat and wait until he was finished. He tried not to eavesdrop but judging from the tone in his voice he wasn't happy. Jack didn't expect this to go well. Both of his prisoners had died while under arrest. Captain Peppers finished his call and gave Jack a concerned look.

"Are you okay Jack?" he was a little surprised Captain Peppers called him by his first name.

"Yes, sir I'm fine," Jack said.

"Fonglitch call me Captain, not sir."

"Yes Captain," he said.

"Are you sure you're okay?" he pressed.

"Yes Captain, I'm just- I should have been more aware of my surroundings. Those men died and I should have stopped it." Jack said.

"It's not your fault Jack." Captain Peppers said.

Jack raised a questioning eyebrow as Peppers continued.

"Preliminary reports are in. The two shooters had Brass Ghost initiation tattoos on their torso. The tech unit is going over the drone right now. The weapon was an illegally modified 10 gauge shotgun. We've come across those before, but what really concerns me is the ammunition they used. High-velocity armor piercing ballistic capped sabot rounds made of solid bronze. It looks like they were going Sentinel hunting."

Captain Peppers leaned back in his chair and rubbed the bridge of his nose letting out a long sigh.

"This Beowulf Crisis is hitting the fan now Jack. XPD can't sit back while Sentinels are being deliberately targeted. The Chief is putting everyone on high alert and kicking this whole thing over to SOU. They're taking it from here."

"Special Operations Unit? But Sir- Captain, I can-" Peppers held up his hand silencing Jack.

"In the meantime, you're going to report to medical to get a complete checkup. They're expecting you, so don't make them wait. After you're cleared, I want you to go home for the day and get some rest. I'm putting you on special detail until your Samson is back to 100 percent.
